Photo Editors who regularly commission freelancers are invited to apply for the first Photo Editor Safety Cohort Program taking place in November, organized ACOS Alliance in partnership with World Press Photo.

Photo Editors have the potential to positively impact the safety of the photographers and visual journalists they work with, but are often overlooked when it comes to safety training. This program provides a unique opportunity for photo editors to understand their safety roles and responsibilities and gain the tools and knowledge they need to assess and mitigate risks, and confidently commission journalistic work.

Taking place every Monday in November, the safety cohort will bring together up to 15 photo editors for weekly webinars structured around the online course The Fundamentals of Safe Commissioning, followed by a one-to-one coaching session that will help participants take forward their training and apply it to their own individual needs and circumstances. The cohort model provides a supportive and collegiate environment for in-depth learning and discussion with peers. The training is designed to encourage ongoing thought processes around safety and covers digital, legal, physical and psychological safety aspects.

The cohort will be led by independent security consultant Michael Christie, former Head of Safety at Reuters. Mike has previously held roles as Reuters Bureau Chief in Iraq and in the US Southeast and Caribbean and has worked with editors and journalists all over the world.

The program is offered free and is open to photo editors globally. Those working in volatile and under-represented regions, and those working for under-resourced media, are encouraged to apply. All webinars and coaching will be conducted in English over Zoom.

  • The program begins on Monday 3rd November

  • The closing date for applications is Wednesday 1st October 2025
