Safety Clinics return to the International Journalism Festival in April 2023

Safety experts from Buzzfeed, IREX, IWMF, Media Defence, PEN America, Silk Road Training and the Vance Center for International Justice, will be offering free clinics to independent journalists and editors attending this year’s Festival in Perugia on 20th and 21st April.

These individual, 50 minute consultations, organised by ACOS in partnership with Committee to Protect Journalists, are particularly useful for journalists and editors who already have a basic knowledge of safety and are looking for guidance on a specific issue, assignment, story or situation.

They are open to independent journalists, photographers, filmmakers and editors at all stages of their career and can cover the following topics:

  • physical safety and risk assessment

  • digital security and surveillance

  • online harassment and violence

  • legal safety and preparedness

  • psychological safety and trauma management

This is a rare opportunity for journalists and editors to receive personalised safety guidance from leading experts.

All clinics are confidential and will take place at Hotel La Rosetta on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 April between 10.00 and 18.30. Date and time slot will be allocated after application. Spaces are limited so early, pre-festival application is advised.

Most clinics will be conducted in English, with French and Spanish offered by some experts. Participants will be matched with the most appropriate advisor based on the information provided in their application.

Deadline for applications is Monday 10 April 2023.
