The ACOS Alliance is partnering with Photoville and Committee to Protect Journalists to offer two safety training events for freelance photographers at this year's Photoville Festival in June:
Safety 101 for Visual Journalists gives freelance photographers an introduction to safety as a pillar of professionalism. This free two hour workshop led by journalism risk expert Yemile Bucay and Wall Street Journal Photo Editor Ariel Zambelich, will provide the essential tools and knowledge needed to adhere to safety best practice, covering the basics of:
Situational awareness
Threat modelling
Risk assessment and communications plan
De-escalation best practices
It will highlight the importance of a holistic approach to safety and security, providing and will facilitate an informal exchange where participants can voice doubts, ask questions and share experience. It will also include case studies and exercises.
The workshop takes place 2:00 - 4:00 PM on Sunday June 11 at the International Center of Photography, 79 Essex Street, New York City
For those with some knowledge of safety best practice, the the ever-popular Freelance Safety Clinics will be available online as part of the festival, offering tailored one to one guidance for photojournalists and documentary photographers both in and outside of the US.
