ACOS is co-developing a generative AI safety tool

ACOS Alliance is partnering with the Journalism Protection Initiative at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY to develop a generative AI tool that will democratize access to safety expertise for under-resourced newsrooms.

A key objective of the ACOS Alliance is to level up the safety playing field for under-resourced media and freelance journalists. Our goal as co-developers of this tool is to bring the very best security information to every news organization, regardless of size and income. An initial prototype has established the potential of the project and helped to identify next steps. The tool's development will be guided by an Advisory Board chaired by Gina Chua, Executive Editor at Semafor and former Executive Editor at Reuters. Newsroom safety expert Mike Christie is serving as technical adviser.

We will have more to say about the project as part of a wider discussion exploring the role of AI in journalism safety at the ACOS Alliance Annual Safety Coordination Meeting which takes place in London on 22-23 October for invited participants. A report of the meeting will be published in December.
