Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence & Trauma

Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma is an educational charity promoting the physical and emotional safety of journalists in Canada and abroad. They also study the effects of newsgathering on those we cover and on news consumers.

The annual Forum Freelance Fund competition provides safety training bursaries to Canadian freelancers OR freelancers of any nationality currently working anywhere in the world for Canadian media organizations.

New in 2016: the annual Portenier Human Rights Bursary (named for Forum board member and acclaimed filmmaker Giselle Portenier). Applicants can be of any nationality and must be working actively on human rights abuse projects.

They partner with Rory Peck Trust on both of these competitions.

The Forum is currently producing an online resource for journalism schools based on our one-day risk awareness workshops. This resource will also be of use to freelancers, especially at the start of their careers, and to domestic reporters and journalism educators in many parts of the world. It will include Canada-specific information, information gathered in consultation with journalists in other countries, and universal information and links to other resources.
